The National Institute of Construction Technology and Management (NICTM), Uromi is set to host an impactful construction technology conference titled “The Impact of Technology such as Building Information Modelling (BIM) in Advancing Construction Practices in Developing Countries.” The conference will take place on Thursday, 22nd October 2026, at 10:00am and will bring together students from the Civil Engineering, Architecture, and Building Technology departments for an engaging and forward-looking academic experience.

The conference is designed to expose students to the growing role of digital technologies in transforming the construction industry and to demonstrate how technologies such as Building Information Modelling (BIM) can improve the way construction projects are designed, coordinated, delivered and managed, particularly within developing countries.

The session will explore the practical application of BIM and other emerging construction technologies, highlighting how digital tools can help address some of the challenges faced by the construction industry, including poor information management, design coordination problems, project delays, cost overruns, rework and inefficient collaboration between project stakeholders.

During the conference, students will be exposed to:

● Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Digital Construction

● BIM Collaboration and Project Coordination

● Emerging Technologies and the Future of Construction

The conference will provide an opportunity for students to appreciate the importance of developing digital skills alongside their traditional professional knowledge. Through practical demonstrations, discussions and interactive engagement, students will gain a better understanding of how technology is changing professional roles and creating new opportunities within the construction industry.

The interdisciplinary nature of the conference will also encourage students from Civil Engineering, Architecture and Building Technology to understand the importance of collaboration. Rather than viewing construction disciplines as separate areas of practice, students will explore how effective communication and information exchange between different professionals can contribute to better project outcomes.

This initiative reflects NICTM’s commitment to equipping students with industry-relevant knowledge and preparing them for an increasingly technology-driven construction industry. By exposing students to international developments and practical applications of BIM, the conference aims to encourage innovation, digital literacy and continuous professional development.

The event will further strengthen the connection between classroom knowledge, emerging construction technologies and real-world industry practices, providing students with knowledge and skills that can contribute to the modernisation of construction practices in Nigeria and other developing countries
